This is the compost I use to enrich the soil. One bag per bed!

I added some parsley to the tomato bed.

Time to plant

I finally got to spend some time in the garden. The Morning Glory had invaded the entire flower bed including this Turks Cap bush. I historically trim this dude back to the crown and in a month or so it will be 3 feet high and ready to bloom. The hummingbirds love it!

Time Crunch

I got a little more work done on the preparation of the beds today.

I like to add organic material to each bed every year. This year I found some bagged composted cotton burr mulch. I have used this before and it blends well with the soil and helps retain moisture.

I finished two more beds today before dark. One will be for cucumbers and one for cantaloupe.

I set up trellises for these viney guys to grow on. Getting them up off the soil is helpful in keeping the fungus down.

Weed bed. I should go into weed production...I have no trouble getting them to grow!

Neglected garden beds! These beds haven't been touched since late last summer. As you can see they are full of weeds and need some attention.

Peppers!

I like to grow sweet and hot varieties. This year I have green and red bell, sweet banana, poblano and jalapeno.

Celebrity is the only variety I plant for regular sized tomatoes. A co-worker told me about them as they have proven to be able to stand up to the heat and either the floods or drought conditions normally experienced in this area.

The first tomato bed. I use cages to support the vines. Soon after the plants get established I will mulch with common hay. It works great to shade the soil and it keeps the moisture in.

The entry arbor. This will soon be covered with Morning Glory vines.

Seedlings

Springtime is here!

Ok - its time to get up off the couch and get outside! My garden is calling. I just love the taste of fresh veggies especially tomatoes...and cucumbers, orka, peppers, and just about anything that will grow.

I have 8 raised beds that I have been keeping up for the last 5 years. Here in the Gulf Coast of Texas planting time comes early. Some folks garden year round but you need to be home in daylight hours to do that. In the winter I leave for work in the dark and its dark by the time I get home in the evening.

I'll be posting pictures of the progress and especially of the harvest.
